Festival of Quilts Part 2

Part 1 on Monday was about the exhibition. Part 2 is more about.....the SHOPPING!

This is all the fabric I bought.

There were a couple of groups. The first was cats. It's just a weakness I have. No photo of those in particular. The second is for fruity goodness.

I got a metre if that cherry one. Would love to do a skirt but would need to line it as it's a bit thin. Which reminds me. Why wear a sheer white skirt with dark thong? I can think why you would do that. But I can't help thinking that you're under a misapprehension about what looks....lookable. Unless I'm wrong. I must ask Pooch. Anyway.

Then there were japanese ones.
Photobucket
And Christmas ones (for little nephew's stocking).
Photobucket
And then random ones.

This group includes a bolt-end piece I saw in a bargain basket. It's called 'dysfunctional family' and I knew I had to have it when I saw this panel.
Photobucket
Perfect!

I also got three feet for my sewing machine.
Photobucket
One is for the machine embroidery course I'm doing in a few weeks at Make Lounge. The others will be demonstrated in coming weeks. And lastly I got two kits - one for a wire bracelet, which is genius in its simplicity. And another for Sashiko.
Photobucket
I did a Sashiko workshop at the Festival which was pretty cool. Although it does strike me that this was another of those 'channelling your inner 17-year-old' moments where I could have just got on with it. I need to think about what else this might be stopping me from doing. But having said that, the teacher was very good and went into the whys and wherefores and I am looking forward to finishing my sample in the next week and starting the one I have bought.

So yes, a very good weekend for me. And I will definitely be back next year!

Dalston - place of mystery and intrigue

The reopening of the East London line has opened up several not-so-far-flung corners of London. I had a long-standing appt to meet a friend there and it took a mere 20 mins to get straight to the heart of the area, and the delights that contains. For a start there is a huuuuuuuuge market. More fruit, veg, fish, clothes, shoes, bags, cooking pots etc than you can shake an incense stick at. That's where I scored this massive amount of cherries from - just £2.
Photobucket
Then there are all the stalls with fabric on. And not just stalls. My visit had a dual purpose and the first was to visit Dalston Mill, which really has to be seen to be believed. (The website just doesn't do it justice.) This gives you a rough idea:
Photobucket
Floor to ceiling fabric bolts. So that's 3 stories high of fabric. Then there is all the floor space stacked with rolls. Then there are the back rooms. It was pretty amazing. I asked them how they got the the rolls off the top tiers and the lovely lady helping us said they hook them down. Then if the customer doesn't like the fabric close up they have to put it back! There was also yarn - all acrylic but a good variety, tonnes of buttons and a room of haberdashery. Nice. I was amazingly restrained. A metre of this beautiful cotton.
Photobucket
And I couldn't resist one of these beautiful buttons - so gorgeous.

The other reason for going was to see another Louise Riley exhibition. Her stuff is just so amazing. This is my all time favourite piece:
Photobucket
The exhibition was on in Dalston Superstore. I'd not been there before and it was great - brilliant food and a great way to see the art. This is a new one and really amazing.
Photobucket
Bernie and I had a great lunch, under another amazing piece.
Photobucket
I so want to be Louise Riley. Woe.

But who am I? I am Auntie Alex, wife of Uncle Grumpy. Who finally handed over this photo.
Photobucket
And I patchwork like a demon.

Holiday round up - part 2

I'd covered woolfest in my last post but hadn't got on to the Lakes themselves. It really is an amazing part of the world. The light changes in minutes from bright sunshine to threatening gloom. We only had two downpours - one while driving which reduced visibility to about 5 metres - and one while having dinner. So, just before...
Photobucket
During...
Photobucket
Just after....
Photobucket
Aren't the low puffy clouds amazing? I recently invested in this book so spent a long time trying to work out which was which.

One can not go to Keswick without visiting the Cumberland Pencil Musuem. I was quite fascinated by how they are made - not how I had imagined - plus I have now seen the worlds largest pencil, as authenticated by the Guiness Book of Records.
Photobucket
There you go - now you've seen it too. It's yellow.

We (I - Pooch don't drive) drove from there to Colne to see the in-laws and took a scenic route. We passed someone called Farfield Mill which was described as an arts and crafts centre so naturally we had to go in. I'd recommend a visit if you have a chance. It's full of artists in residence plus exhibitions and old weaving equipment, some of it in use. This one...
Photobucket
...had the most exquisite wip on it.
Photobucket
I do love a good zigzag. Also this deserves special mention.
Photobucket
I think it is wet felted. Each panel was as tall as me. Very beautiful.

With the in-laws the action continued fast and furious. We went to Ilkley and to Betty's which is surely the ultimate tea room. Very traditional, with cakes on stands and the most delicious macaroons! Pooch in particular was very taken with them.
Photobucket
While food is always the highlight for Pooch, for me it was a trip to Duttons for Buttons, which I didn't even know was there. Behold, the button room.
Photobucket
(droooooooool) My MIL stood there in amazement as I went into fits of ooh and aah like a giddy kipper. 20 mins later I had about a dozen chosen. Man, I just love buttons.

We got back on wed night and since then have celebrated my birthday! (yesterday). Pooch got me a lovely dress that I am now really too old to wear (bit short) but what the hell. I wore it to dinner at Gauchos last night and felt like a million dollars.
Photobucket
I got some lovely presents and there are more coming today when I meet up with my sis for a picnic (weather allowing). Hoorah!

In amongst all this activity I have also found time to match up my secret pal group. I'm planning to send out the matches tomorrow so if you're in my group (and you'll know because I'll have sent you an email or two already) look out for them tomorrow.
